Why do I diet? What is the motivation behind my desire to completely change my diet and lifestyle?
In the past my diets were both extrinsically motivated and extrinsically sourced meaning that I relied completely on what other people thought of me to form my motivation to diet and I listened to what others told me would be good for my body, but I never learned to listen to my own body.
This morning I re-watched the documentary Hungry for Change and I wanted to share a short clip just in case you haven’t seen this one yet!
Kris Karr is one of the interviewee’s in this documentary and she is one of my favorite inspirational sources as I work to transform my understanding of lifestyle and diet. She is the life force behind Crazy Sexy Cancer and a truly incredible woman! She began her interview by saying:
I reached the age of 31 and I had NO IDEA how to take care of this body I lived in.
I related to that statement 100%, it took me getting very sick and spending way too much time in the hospital to realize that taking care of my body, ie dieting, is not only a lifestyle but it’s also a skill set! We aren’t born with this knowledge and I managed to make myself so sick because I never took the time, energy, or attention to study my own body and its needs.
I spent my whole life asking myself “what do I want?” instead of “what does my body need right now?”.
In the past when I dieted, my success doing that diet was in direct relation to how much weight I lost. The more weight I lost the happier I was and conversely the less weight I loss the more depressed and guilty I felt.
Let’s change that paradigm by shifting our definition of success.
Success instead means that we have given our body EVERYTHING it needs and as such we feel fabulous and full of energy. How would that change how you view what you eat everyday?
So here’s the challenge:
Stop thinking about how much weight we could, should, or want to lose instead ask yourself this question: “How will this help me to live to my fullest potential?”
Get out there and love your life, every moment of it, and gift your body with everything it needs!
With love and joy,
