Change your mindset and find the right balance for a new diet in your life!
My diet fits into my life NOT my life fits into my diet!
At the Fat Summit hosted by Dr. Mark Hyman, Deepak Chopra introduced the idea that it is better to eat bad food in a good environment than it is to eat good food in a bad environment. (Of course the optimal scenario is a good environment with good food)
That seems strange and nothing like any other diet I’ve ever been on has said before..but this is Deepak Chopra we’re talking about here! What was he thinking?
Our bodies Autonomic Nervous System is split into 2 branches:
- Parasympathetic Nervous System-aka “Rest & Digest”
- Sympathetic Nervous System-aka “Fight or Flight”
The Sympathetic Nervous System is in charge of regulating all unconscious body functions, such as our respiratory(lungs) and cardiovascular(heart) systems. The “fight or flight” response of the Sympathetic Nervous System can be triggered by an outside stimulus, such as a sense of danger (ie predator-prey scenario) but it also can be triggered by an emotional response, such as stress. What I didn’t know was that when our bodies “fight or flight” response is triggered the body shuts down all non-essential functions, chief among them our digestive system.
What this results in is a halting of all digestion processes. Have you ever had that experience of sitting a table where it’s really stressful and you feel like you just can’t eat another bite? Maybe you just feel super full or perhaps your starting to get a bit queasy and nauseous? This is your body’s way of letting you know it doesn’t have the energy to digest anything right then, all it’s energy is focused on addressing whatever triggered the “fight or flight” response.
All of this to say: don’t let your food control you, get out there and enjoy your life in community with others!
With love and joy,
